What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a popular skincare treatment that allows for controlled stimulation of the skin’s self-repair process by creating many precise, “micro-injuries.” This process triggers new collagen synthesis without causing scars or other damage to your skin. Micro-injuries allow for the creation of channels that allow skincare products to penetrate deeper into the skin, resulting in improved product delivery. Treatments can address acne scars, wrinkles, stretch marks and sun damage on many parts of the body, including the face, neck, arms, hands, abdomen, back and legs.

How does microneedling work?

The microneedling pen is a handheld device that has multiple tiny needles at one end. These microneedles penetrate the top layer of skin and create controlled micro-channels in the tissue. When your skin is penetrated in this way, your body will stimulate new collagen growth for repair. Collagen is great for our skin, and allows it to maintain firmness and elasticity. The treated area will gradually repair itself with new skin cells. Additionally, these microneedles can deliver beneficial product into your skin, providing you with even better results. Acne scars, stretch marks, pigmentation and sun damage, wrinkles & fine lines and the overall appearance of your skin can be improved with microneedling!

What can I expect during treatments?

When you come in for a consultation at Luma Med Spa, we can determine if microneedling is the right treatment option for you. If it is, you will sit or lie down as we use the microneedling pen to go over the predetermined, targeted areas. The procedure is not painful, as the needles are so fine and small that you will hardly notice the piercing that occurs. Many of our patients describe their appointment as comfortable.

When will I notice my results?

The results are typically seen immediately, although optimal results will be seen in 3-6 months, as dermal collagen remodeling takes time. But for the best outcome, a series of at least 3 treatments (typically closer to 6) are required, spaced 4-6 weeks apart. The number of treatments you require is determined by your skin’s health and your aesthetic goals. Your total healing time will depend on the severity of your damaged skin and the depth of repair that the process required. You may notice redness and swelling after the procedure, but this should fade after 2-4 days.
