What causes wrinkles?
Wrinkles are caused by a combination of collagen loss, skin laxity, and repetitive facial movements. Together these three factors create the perfect environment for fine lines and folds to become more pronounced. As we age, our bodies lose elastin and collagen, which keep our skin hydrated, firm and elastic. With repeated facial expressions over time, it becomes harder and harder for our skin to resort back to an “expressionless” state. As a result of aging skin, crow’s feet and frown lines gradually develop and the nasolabial folds become more prominent.
What are crow’s feet?
Crow’s feet, also known as laugh or smile lines, are the lines around the outer corner of the eye. They typically appear in our early 30s (or earlier without an effective skin care regimen). Crow’s feet will appear on the face when the muscles around the eyes are unable to fully rest. Other contributing factors of crow’s feet include sun damage and a slower renewal of cells (skin turnover) in the body.
What are frown lines?
Also known as the 11s, frown lines are the creases between the brows. Often these unwanted lines also appear above the brow and around the eyes. These pesky lines become an issue when repeated movement causes a more permanent crease to remain, even when we are not angry. Both men and women find these wrinkles to be an annoying concern.
What are nasolabial folds?
Nasolabial folds are the deep skin fold creases that run from the sides of your nose to the corners of your mouth. Also known as smile or laugh lines, they are most visible when you smile or laugh, which is where the more descriptive labels come from. They are commonly caused by the repetition of facial movements, and often become more prominent in the early 20s. Their appearance is inevitable.
What are fine lines?
Fine lines indicate the beginning of the skin’s aging process. They are shallow, small, and may be difficult to detect at first. Fine lines are often associated with repetitive facial movements, such as laughing, frowning, smiling or squinting. Because they are still superficial, they respond to treatments much faster than deeper wrinkles.
Wrinkles form when fine lines aren’t effectively addressed. As a result, fine lines deepen and progress into facial folds and wrinkles. Wrinkles also tend to form in different areas of the face and neck, whereas fine lines frequently form around the eyes and mouth.
